Bishop Musikuwa calls for unity among clergy and the religious

Priests and religious have been asked to remain one with Christ and one another if they are to carry out a successful mission in the Church.  The call was made by Bishop Musikuwa during the celebration of the Pontifical Missionary Union at St. Michael’s Cathedral on Saturday, 7th February 2026.

In his homily, the Bishop recalled how Joseph and Mary collaborated with God’s will by taking the infant Jesus to the temple to present him. He thus said that these are an example to all missions: they should be united with Christ, but also with one another.

Speaking on behalf of all priests, Fr Lazalous Maloya, who is the chairperson for the local clergy in the Diocese, pleaded with the clergy and the religious to cherish the unity that exists among them and leverage it for the mission they all undertake.

The celebrated climaxed with the celebration of mass followed by lunch.

There are no religious congregation for priests in the Diocese of Chikwawa. However, there are six congregations for sisters in the Diocese.

Choir festival launched: God’s mercy to be the central message

Choirs have been called upon to be agents of God’s mercy through their songs as they prepare for the Diocesan Choir Festival later this year. The remarks were made during the official launch of the festival marked by Eucharistic celebration at St Mathews Parish in Nchalo. Honorable Francis Folley, Deputy Minister of Education, who is also a legislator for Nsanje North, made the call when speaking to a large group of choirs that assembled for the function. Hon Folley unveiled a total package of 10 million Malawi Kwacha competition for the choirs, revealing that the theme for the festival is “God’s mercy is boundless”. Beaming with joy, Diocesan Laity Council Chairman, Mr John Nyaika, expressed gratitude to Hon Folley for this gift to the church and urged all choirs to grab this opportunity just as they would gladly take musical classes. During the festival, choirs will prepare  two sacred songs, one about  God’s Mercy and then song number 38 from the catholic hymn book.   The competition will run from February 14 to April 6, 2026, with prizes in 4 categories of best choir, best women choir, best keyboardist and best choir conductor.

Feast of the presentation of the Lord and Pastoral Missionary Union celebrations

The Diocese of Chikwawa will hold celebrations for the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord on Saturday, 7th February 2026. The celebration, which joins all men and women who consecrated their lives to serving God, will be done conjointly with the commemoration of Pastoral Missionary Union, PMU. The Office of the Diocesan Pastoral Secretary announced in a letter dated 27th January 2026. The celebration will be held at St Michael’s Cathedral from 9 AM. All the faithful in the Diocese are encouraged to come.

Bishops hold first plenary meeting

The Secretariat for the mother body of all catholic bishops in Malawi, The Malawi Conference for Catholic Bishops, MCCB, has announced its first plenary meeting for the year 2026. According to the press release from the secretariat, signed by Very Rev Fr Valeriano Mtseka who is the Conference’s Secretary General, the plenary will run from Monday 26th January 2026 to Friday 30th January 2026. The meeting which will draw all members of the Conference, will also be graced by the Apostolic Nuncio to Zambia and Malawi, His Excellency Most Rev GianLuca Perici. Among other things, the plenary will discuss issues on Synod on Synodality, recent developments in all lay catholic movements, progress and status of the Directorates of the Secretariat, priestly formation, among others. The press release concludes by calling upon all Christians to commend the Bishops to the Lord in prayer. The Bishops hold plenary meetings twice a year. This is a platform where the Bishops discus matters to do with the mission of the Church in Malawi and the world.
