Hundreds of families in Nchalo, in the Lundu area, have now spent their second night on the M1 road as floodwaters fill their homes, rendering them uninhabitable.
This follows days of heavy downpour of rain in the lower Shire Valley districts of Nsanje and Chikwawa. The situation is worsened by the large volumes of water the area is receiving from the Shire and Mwanza rivers as the rains continue to pour in the uplands where these two big rivers flow from.
According to the status report from the Department of Disaster Management Affairs as of 19th March 2026, a total of 1565 households have been affected, with three deaths and two injuries. This follows heavy rain the area has received from the 15th to 18th March 2026. All the TAs in Chikwawa have been affected. The number affected is but a fraction of the country’s total of 9,598.
DoDMA has since begun distribution of relief items, with a full-scale response to follow once the situation eases. As of today, the M1 road between Bereu and Nchalo in Chikwawa is completely cut off, rendering mobility impossible.
The Diocese of Chikwawa, through its Development desk(CADECOM) in the Social Services Directorate, has already begun interfacing with different donor partners and organizations with an aim to raise funds for relief activities.
Meanwhile, the weather conditions in the region give hope as for the first time in four days, there is sunshine. This will offer comfort as water levels are set to go down, offering relief for these victims to return home.

Catholics have been urged to love being in lay Christian groups with the aim of finding ways to help develop the Church. His Lordship, Bishop Peter Musikuwa of the Diocese of Chikwawa said this yesterday,31st October, at St Michael’s Cathedral during a Eucharistic celebration marking the closing of the Holy month of Rosary and the Year of the Laity Day celebration. He emphasized that the major purpose of lay Christian groups in the Church is to pray for people and to assist the Church in its needs. Speaking at the same event, the Pastoral Secretary of the Diocese, Fr. Samson Kayuni, asked the lay Christians to prepare well for the major Church events that will take place next year. Fr. Kayuni thanked Bishop Musikuwa for leading the important ceremony that helped the lay Christians to better understand their role and duties. Speaking earlier, the Chairperson of the Laity Council in the Diocese, Mr. John Nyaika, said his committee will start reviewing associations and groups in the Church so that they serve properly in their duties. The event started in the morning with lessons on the responsibilities of the Laity Council, which was led by various priests serving in the diocese. The Laity Council chose Pope John Paul II as the patron saint of the association, which started in the Diocese of Dedza in 1992 after the Vatican II Council.

St Michael’s choir, of St Michael’s Cathedral in the Diocese of Chikwawa is set to launch its fifth album. Titled Chifundo cha Mulungu, the album launch will take place on Sunday, 1 November 2026. The launch will begin with Holy Mass at St Michael’s Cathedral at 7:00 a.m. Celebrations will continue at Chikwawa Secondary School Hall from 1:30 p.m. Choir Chairperson Patrick Luke explained that the title means “God’s Mercy.” “Christians are passing through difficult times and facing many challenges such as divorce, poverty and hunger caused by climate change, which sometimes lead people to make harmful decisions,” he said. “The title Chifundo cha Mulungu reminds the faithful that, whatever trials they face, our loving heavenly Father never abandons us.” “God always comes to our rescue, for His mercy is without limit,” Patrick Luke added. This is the fifth album the choir has produced in both CD and DVD formats. Patrick Luke said the choir chose to begin the launch with Holy Mass in thanksgiving to God for His mercy. “We faced several challenges during the project, including a lack of funds for transport while recording the audio and video, yet through God’s mercy we were able to complete the work,” he said. “As a Catholic community we hold the Holy Eucharist in the highest regard.” “We therefore thought it fitting to begin all activities of the album launch with Holy Mass so that the love of God may accompany us throughout the day.” Guest choirs will be St Francis Choir from Nsanje Parish and St James Chilomoni Choir from the Archdiocese of Blantyre. Supporting choirs include St Bernadette Choir, St Augustine Choir, St Kizito Choir and St Teresa Women’s Choir from Dyeratu; St Matthew’s, Holy Trinity and St Anne Women’s Choir from Nchalo Parish; St Patrick’s Choir from Ngabu Parish; Mitole CCAP Church Choir; the Salvation Singers; St Augustine and St Mary’s Choirs from Bereu; and many others. Entry fees at Chikwawa Secondary School Hall will be K500 for children and K1,000 for adults. The central message of the album is the love of God, thanksgiving in all circumstances, and the call to repentance and confession of sins. Patrick Luke invited the faithful to support the choir. “We wish to share the Gospel of God through music. We therefore appeal to the people to come in large numbers and support us by purchasing copies of the album,” he said. The album is available in both audio and video formats so that the Word of God may reach every Christian.

The Diocese of Chikwawa today held a Memorial Mass for the late Right Reverend Felix Eugenio Mkhori, the first Malawian Bishop of the Diocese, at the St Francis Convent of the Mary Consoler of the Afflicted (MCA) Sisters. The Mass was celebrated on 27 October 2026, exactly fourteen years after the Bishop’s death, and was followed by the laying of flowers at his mausoleum. Born on 24 August 1931, Bishop Mkhori was ordained a priest on 8th September 1961, before being consecrated as the first Malawian Bishop of Chikwawa on 8th January 1978. Sister Elizabeth Isabel Lapozo, Mother General for the congregation, said Bishop Mkhori founded their congregation on 8 March 2000. “He wanted us to pray and to help the vulnerable women, children and the elderly in the Diocese of Chikwawa,” she said. Sister Lapozo described the late Bishop as a calm and prayerful man who always guided the sisters with gentleness. “He always told us that the introduction of the MCA Sisters is a long journey which needs prayers so that God should help us fulfil the vision,” she recalled. Fourteen years and counting, the sisters continue to live out his vision by visiting vulnerable people in their homes, providing basic needs, building houses, paying school fees and sharing Christmas meals and gifts with them. Today the congregation has twenty-two professed sisters, nine postulants and four novices. Sister Lapozo appealed that the memorial of Bishop Mkhori should be observed every year at diocesan level. “Bishop Mkhori did great things in the Diocese of Chikwawa, and this event should be remembered by the whole diocese every year,” she said.

Chikwawa Parish Young Christian Workers have elected Francis Khungwa as their Chairperson deputized by Angella Tembo while Hanneck Kadyamba and Boniface Kamgugu have bee elected as Secretary and Treasurer General respectively. The Parish YCW executive committee were elected yesterday, Sunday 25th October 2026,at St Michaels Cathedral during the Elective Annual General meeting. Earlier in the morning, the team held a fundraiser aiming at raising funds to assist the renovation of St Michael’s Cathedral project which is underway. Francis Khungwa, the newly elected Chairperson thanked the YCW team for committing themselves to different projects but also encouraged everyone to take a leading role in supporting church activities, nourishing faith as well as fulfilling church agendas and plans. Among the funds raised, there will be a small allocation to support a trip to Fatima next month and a big walk fundraiser in December. Chikwawa Parish YCW section has also agreed to revamp other youths groupings from outstations in the parish.
