The first will be last, the last will be first

Isaiah 55: 6-9; Philippians 1:20-24, 27; Matthew 20:1-16

Today’s Gospel leaves us with a thought that can be difficult for the human heart to understand. The labourers who worked from early morning received the same wage as those who were called only in the late afternoon. Naturally, the first workers felt that this was unfair. But Jesus reminds us that God’s justice is not limited by our human calculations of fairness.

The early workers received exactly what had been agreed with them. The latecomers, however, received not what their limited hours seemed to deserve, but what the generosity of the landowner freely chose to give.

And perhaps this is where the Gospel speaks most deeply to my own life.

How many times have I received blessings I did not earn? How many times has God opened a door for me when, by human calculation, I thought I had already arrived too late? How many times has He forgiven me when justice alone would have demanded an account?

God is just, but His justice is wrapped in mercy.

Our human justice often asks, “What does this person deserve?”

God’s mercy asks, “What can I give this person because I love them?”

This does not mean that God ignores justice. Rather, it reveals that His mercy is greater than our calculations and His thoughts are higher than our thoughts (Isaiah 55:8–9). The Gospel challenges us not to become jealous when God is generous to another person, but to rejoice in the goodness of a God whose love cannot be measured by human standards. Perhaps someone feels today that they have come too late. Perhaps someone thinks they have wasted too many years, made too many mistakes, or wandered too far from God.

It is never too late for God.

The laborer who came at the eleventh hour was still welcomed into the vineyard.
