Homily for 6th Sunday in Ordinary Time: Trusting in the Lord
Readings: First reading: Jer 17:5-8, Second Reading 1 Cor 15:12, 16-20, Gospel Luke 6:17, 20-26.
The word of the Lord today invites us to trust Him. Through the preaching of Jeremiah, God reminds Israel the folly of trusting in human intervention and powers. Faced with the danger of attack from every side, Israel had a choice to make; making an alliance with super powers or trusting God. Israel chose the former. This is the basis of Jeremiah’s words reminding the benefits of trusting God.
Christians make manifest this by focusing their eyes on heavenly things. This is the root of blessedness. Through the beatitudes, Christ exhorts his audience on the need to be selfless and detach oneself from worldly possession and pleasures in order to be called blessed. Only those that trust in God will see the need to focus their gaze on heavenly things.
In all this, Christ stands as the perfect example of selfless giving in order to attain the eternal reward. And so will all who trust in Him.
