Homily on Sunday: Solemnity of Christ the King

3 February, 2025

Readings: Daniel 7: 13 – 14, Revelation 1: 5 – 8; John 18: 33 – 37.

Today is the final Sunday of the liturgical calendar. We end at the climax with the celebration of the Christ as the King of the Universe. Today, as we glory in his kingship and reign, we are reminded of our own role as kings as inherited at our baptism.

Daniel visualizes the reign of the son of man. It is a reign that differentiates itself from the reigns envisioned by Daniel in the figures of the four beasts. A reign full of love and mercy which conquers all.

In his response to Pilate, Jesus shows that his reign is not defined by earthly success. The matrix to measure his kingship are heavenly.

We are called therefore to emulate his kingship and have those qualities as his followers. We celebrate being given this opportunity and with him as our leader, we shall reign on earth as we journey to the eternal kingdom.
